The famous water feature of Chatsworth will be making a splash throughout May with a series of breathtaking extra displays guaranteed to include a few surprises.
With rainfall expected to be above average this summer, Chatsworth has decided to meet the challenge head on with its own Water Spectacula, offering the chance to see the iconic gravity-fed water features come to life in the beautiful gardens in a se
quence never seen together before.
It promises to be great fun for all the family with younger members unlikely to be able to resist the opportunity to get a soaking.
The impressive Emperor Fountain will be taken up to double its normal height to around 200ft sending its plume flying across the Canal Pond; water will come pouring put out of the mouths of stone fish after pouring over the roof of the Cascade House; hidden water jets coming out the floor of the Cascade House and in the glade around the Willow Tree fountain are likely to surprise the unsuspecting visitor.
This extra Water Spectacular, on top of the usual playing of the fountains, will take place three times a day on every weekend from Saturday, May 3, for a short time around 12pm, 2pm and 3pm, and is dependent on sufficient water being in the system to feed the additional activity.
Water has always played an important role in the garden at Chatsworth with the famous Cascade, Canal Pond and Willow Tree Fountain dating back to the days of the first Duke in the 1680s.
The Emperor Fountain was created in 1843 at the instigation of the sixth Duke who asked his renowned head gardener Sir Joseph Paxton to create a new record-breaking gravity-fed fountain in anticipation of a visit from Czar Nicholas, the Emperor of Russia, who never came but nonetheless lent his name to the fountain.
Chatsworth is open every day until December 23.
