Altan first formed when the late Frankie Kennedy visited Belfast as a young musician in the 80s and met the talented soprano singer and fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.

Mairéad, who married Frankie in 1987, had been taught the rare Donegal style of fiddle playing by her father, Proinsias.

Together with her soprano voice and Frankie's northern flute tunes, which he picked up on his travels around Ireland, the pair created their first album, Ceol Aduaidh.

The album (which also featured vocals from the then unknown Enya) was a big success and caused a stir among the traditional music scene.

Sadly tragedy struck when Frankie died at 39, after a long battle with cancer. After a period of mourning the band resumed, as was requested by Frankie. Five successful albums later, Altan are back on tour.
