Business owners of 19th century

Regular contributor to Memory Lane Eddie King has sent us a picture of a Bath Street business owner from the 19th century.

Eddie thinks the business, called the Parisian Tailoring Establishment, was operated from number 1, Bath Street in the 1880s and the two in the picture are William Manners and his wife Ellen, whose maiden name was Palfreyman, who lived at 7 Burns Street, next to the chapel.

He said: "It is understood that they also ran a public house on Awsworth Road, although I have not yet discovered which one."

The picture was loaned to Eddie by Mr Manners' great-grandson who is trying to discover if there are any other surviving photos or documents about the business.

He said number 1 Bath Street was later occupied by Andrew McKee, a wine and spirit merchant.

If anyone can help write to Eddie at 24 Stanley Close, Ilkeston DE7 4NA or email eddieking@sky.com.
