Historic last day at Pye Hill Colliery

Memory Lane: Pye Hill Colliery - last day

Memory Lane: Pye Hill Colliery - last day

This picture was taken in 1985 on the last day of production at Pye Hill Colliery near Jacksdale as it finally closed.

The pit had opened in 1874 and was part of the Nottinghamshire Coalfield.Pye Hill was the amalgamation of three pits, according to historians.

Our picture shows the men having just returned from the mine - at the end of their final shift with dirty clothes and faces for the last time.

We don’t have an actual day or month for this one and would love to find out. Also if you recognise any of the men or can tell us more about life at Pye Hill, then get in touch as we’d love to hear from you.

We also love to see your own pictures - especially if you any of the pit.
