Partnership’s hopes after Wednesday trial finishes
FOLLOWING the end of the trial period of asking shops in Ilkeston to break with tradition and open on Wednesdays afternoons Erewash Partnership has said it is hopeful that traders will keep it up.
More than 100 businesses took part in the scheme which started on December 7 and ended last week, aimed at boosting trade in town.
Petals Flowers in Bath Street is one business which will be opening up mid-week more often as a result of the trial.
Owner Ruth Gough said: “It did prove quite successful for me.
“I’ll be closing on Wednesdays for the next few weeks but leading up to Valentine’s Day I’ll be open every Wednesday.
“It’s a bit difficult for me because there’s only me and one other lady but I will be opening on Wednesdays as much as I can, even if it’s just for a couple of hours.”
Market towns co-ordinator at the partnership Paul Calladine said: “I hope now that the trial has ended, that shops have seen the benefits of remaining open on a Wednesday and will continue to do so.
“Shopping habits are changing all the time, especially when it comes to the internet, so it’s important that shops remain open to maximise sales and meet new customer demands.”
