Woolies staff compensated three years on
FORMER Woolworths workers have been granted their redundancy pay – three years after the collapse of the high street chain.
Workers lost their jobs when Ilkeston’s Woolworths in Bath Street closed in January 2009 after the firm went into administration the previous November.
Three years on, shopworkers’ union Usdaw has won compensation for workers after months of legal wrangling.
An employment tribunal this week found that the administrators had failed in their legal obligation to consult with Usdaw.
Members, including those in Ilkeston, were awarded compensation of 60 days pay, capped at £330 a week – the maximum payable.
As the firm was in administration at the time of the redundancies, the taxpayer has been landed with the bill.
The Ilkeston store has stood empty since it shut in 2009.
