Story celebrates borough procession

THE market place in Eastwood used to be in front of the Sun Inn pub on Nottingham Road.

These two pictures show the area in 1912 – long before the road layout changed.

Years ago the junction of Mansfield Road, Nottingham Road and Church Street was just a simple crossroads and Mansfield Road did not go behind the Sun Inn.

The weekly market would have been held where the road is now, in front of the pub.

The Sun Inn is one of the oldest pubs in the town along with the Old Wine Vaults and Moon and Stars. It is not known exactly when it was built because the property was part of the Plumptre Estate and deeds were not needed.

In 1757, John and Hannah Godber are mentioned in local records as alekeepers.

On a 1736 map, a house is shown at the corner of Mansfield Road and Derby Road, but not in the exact same location. A building is however shown on a map dating back to 1791.

Eastwood writer DH Lawrence refers to The Market Place in his novel Sons and Lovers. He writes about Mrs Morrell going to buy trinkets and pots.

Eastwood's weekly market is now held on The Hollies every Thursday.

THIS is a picture of the parade at the Broxtowe Borough Council's Civic Service in 1992.

The service was held on July 26 and the procession left Walker Street accompanied by Notts Boys' Brigade Band.

A news story featured in the Advertiser at the time and read: "Civic dignitaries county-wide including the Lord High Sheriff of Nottingham and the chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council attended the Mayor of Broxtowe's annual civic service.

As the Mayor this year is Eastwood born and bred Cllr Hazel Braithwaite, the service was conducted by the chaplain Rev Stephen Walker at St Mary's Church, Eastwood."

Also in attendance were the deputy mayor and chairman of Awsworth Parish Council Cllr Lydia Ball with her daughter Sarah. The Mayor was accompanied by her husband Cllr Lew Braithwaite.

Eastwood Male Voice Choir also took part in the service and colours standards were presented by local uniformed organisations accompanied by Nottinghamshire Boys' Brigade Band.'

Looking back....

This week in 2000....

A terminally ill toddler in Eastwood was given the money for a dream trip to Disney Land, Paris.

Fundraisers in Stapleford raised 1,500 from raffles and car boot sales for brave Charlotte Lester to see her favourite cartoon characters in France.

Charlotte, aged three, was undergoing chemotherapy for Leukaemia.

Her great aunt, Janet Smith, from Stapleford started the ball rolling by running a raffle at work and was soon swamped with donations.

And just days before her trip of a lifetime, children's charity Wish Upon A Star whisked her off to Lapland with TV celebrity Michael Barrymore to meet Santa.

This week in 1980.....

It was announced that the Redpath Dorman factory in Langley Mill would be shut down putting 160 people out of work.

A company spokesman said at the time there was a shortage of orders and the high value of the pound made export difficult. Factories in other parts of the country were also threatened with closure as the company attempted to reduce annual production from 75,000 tonnes to 40,000 tonnes.

The company was closed by the summer making the steel fabricators, welders and boiler makers redundant.

The company made structural and steel fabrications and was a subsidary of British Steel.

In November 1979 the firm was involved in 2.6 million facelift to London’s Charing Cross Bridge.

This week in 1960....

Over 400 pensioners went to the 12th annual dinner and concert held by the Eastwood Old Folks Treat Committee.

The get together was held in the canteen at Birnham Products Ltd in New Eastwood.

The guests were welcomed by committee chariman Cllr Limb and speakers included treasurer Mr Holmes, who thanked the organisations which offered the group financial support including Eastwood Town Football Club.

Gifts of flowers and whiskey were given to the oldest lady and oldest man at the event.
