Street view from 50 years ago

Regular contributor to Memory Lane Eddie King has sent this view of Ilkeston town centre from the middle of the last century.

The shops on the right hand side of this view of South Street have changed very little in the 50 or more years since the picture was taken, Eddie said.

But the first building on the left hand side with the dark front and leafy side wall is John F Walker printers and stationers where the former Ilkeston Building Society stood. This was more recently a fast food takeaway.

The shop with the Hovis sign, where the small van is parked, was the site of the former Skelston's Bakery.

Further up the street, set back slightly from the pavement was the South Street Schoolroom, which is now the Co-op supermarket.
