War of words over dog survey results
A WAR of words has broken out between councillors over the results of a survey about dog control orders which have not yet been made public.
The Erewash Labour Group claims that the controlling Conservative party is trying to cover up residents’ anger over issues such as dog fouling and owners not keeping their pets under control by keeping the outcome under wraps.
Leader of Erewash Labour, Cllr Howard Griffiths said: “Nearly 900 people responded and present procedures are falling far short of what Erewash residents have a right to expect.
“Dogs are wonderful companions. I myself am a dog owner but there is a big difference between enjoying a dog and allowing your pet to endanger the community.
“When published this consultation will show that local residents believe that their quality of life is being ruined because the council does not have a responsible dog control policy.
“We’re calling upon the Conservative administration to release the result of the consultation with immediate effect so that proposals can be designed to deal with a distressing and, potentially dangerous situation.”
Despite the fact the figures collected last autumn have not yet been made public, Erewash Borough Council’s lead member for the environment, Cllr Barbara Harrison, told the Advertiser that addressing the situation is a priority for the council.
She said: “I am pleased to see the public interest in promoting responsible dog ownership.
“Control of dogs is a priority which is why we have invested in the appointment of a second qualified dog warden allowing us to extend our service to seven days a week.
“The service we are already providing is of a high standard and is one of the best in Derbyshire.
“There is a general wish to see a legal control over dogs in certain places but the law requires that we undertake a formal consultation before we implement dog control orders and we will soon be starting that process.”

Despite the narrow purpose of the survey regarding dog control orders the overwhelming message from the survey was that not enough was being done about dog dirt in Erewash. Dog Wardens are needed for enforcement but also cleaning up is also essential.. In some areas, particularly near Schools, it can be like a mine field. One Parent described to me the difficulties of pushing a buggy whilst holding a toddler and then dodging the dog muck at the same time. Much more needs to done to attack the problem, no wonder some Parents prefer to drive their car to School.
