AN ARTICLE in the ‘Tiser on February 23 prompted one of our readers to send in this photograph taken at a street party in 1951.

Fred Dean dug out the picture, which shows former Ilkeston Carnival Queen Marcia Else in the centre, after reading an article about Ilkeston Lions’ hunt for this year’s queen, which featured a different photograph of Marcia, taken in 1953.

This photograph was taken at the bottom of Victoria Street, now demolished, during what Fred believes is the celebrations for the 1951 Festival of Britain.

Fred’s daughter Tracy Dean, who sent us a copy of the picture via email, said: “Maybe some of your readers would be able to confirm whether it is the Festival of Britain celebration and solve the query for my dad.”
