This photograph shows one of Ilkeston’s most instantly recognisable landmarks during disastrous weather conditions which swept across Ilkeston 80 years ago – almost exactly to the day.

Cotmanhay man David Castle, who brought in the picture of Grade-II* listed Bennerley Viaduct, said he was given the image by a lady called Annie Wheatley who lived in Bridge Street.

It shows how high the flood water had reached under the railway bridge on May 22, 1932.

The viaduct over the River Erewash was built for the railway line between Awsworth Junction and Derby and opened in January 1878.
