This week’s Memory Lane features a preview of photographs from the Ilkeston and Dstrict Society’s latest book Around and About Town.
The book, will be launched on Saturday November 10 at Ilkeston Co-op from 10am onwards.
Stephen Flinders, who has produced the book, said: “This new book, priced at £6, follows on from From Bottom to Top of Town published in 2007, and Top of Town, published in 2009.
“Just like it’s predecessors, Around and About Town features a series of now and then photographs which vividly show how much some parts of the town have changed over the past 100 years or so.
“However what we think makes this new book a little special, compared with the previous two, is that most of, if not all the images have never been published or seen before.”
The photos have been collected after a call went out around a year ago for members of the public to come forward with photographs which may have lay hidden or forgotten in bottom draws.
Stephen added: “Enough unseen images came to light to enable us to publish a slightly larger than planned volume, containing 30 pages of photographs, along with the usual historical notes.”
The book was a joint effort with Stephen Flinders collecting and working on the images and the Society’s Chairman Alan Edwards and Dave Hudson writing the historical notes.
Stephen said: “The recent success of Railway Tales, which was published back in September, along with the successes of the two previous publications, show how much the public enjoy these types of books, which bring back fond memories and stimulate reminiscences and even debates.
“With an initial print run of 500, we’re expecting this to be another big seller, especially in the run up to Christmas.”
Members of the society will be previewing the photographs featured in Around and About Town at Ilkeston Library from 10am on Saturday November 3.
