Opera is up on the big screen

Showcase Cinema de Lux Derby presents the power and drama of the Met Opera’s New York stage with their premiere production of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, broadcast live via satellite on Saturday, January 19, at 5.55pm, as part of The Met: Live in HD cinema season.

David McVicar directs the second of Donizetti’s famous trilogy of operas about Tudor history. McVicar received wide acclaim last season with his interpretation of Anna Bolena and now returns with Maria Stuarda, an opera that depicts the fateful life of Mary, Queen of Scots and the rivalry with her cousin Queen Elizabeth I.

McVicar commented: “Donizetti’s three Tudor operas are very different in tone, mood, and musical content. For Maria Stuarda, we’ve gone for a visual style which is freer. Rather than reflecting history, it reflects the romantic nature of this retelling of the story and the sweeping romantic nature of Donizetti’s music.”

Joyce DiDonato, one of the world’s most exciting singers, takes on the virtuosic bel canto role of the defiant Mary, Queen of Scots opposite Elza van den Heever, who makes her Met debut as Queen Elizabeth I.

Tickets are available now from the box office, online at www.cinemadelux.co.uk, via the Showcase mobile app or through the 24 hour ticket hotline on 0871 220 1000. General tickets are priced at £12.50, with students and Insider members priced at £10.
