Eclipse Theatre Company will be at Derby Theatre from February 20-23 to perform the acclaimed touring production of One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show.

Written by Don Evans, it has been described as a ‘Restoration comedy meets The Cosby Show’ and is the American playwright’s take on the always thorny subject of class.

In 1970s Philadelphia, the Harrisons are the most respectable middle-class black family in the suburbs.

However, the arrival of their young niece and her radical ideas from the rural South turns their polite, Christian life on its head.

This is ahilariously outrageous play about how hard we try to hide who we really are.

Presented as a live television recording of the period, equipped with canned applause, recording gear, and a great soundtrack, One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show frames itself as a sitcom, in recognition of the play’s contemporary influences.

Jocelyn Jee Esien stars in One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show and is the first and only black woman who has had her own TV comedy show in the UK.

She is best known for her BBC2 sketch show Little Miss Jocelyn and BBC3’s hidden camera show Three Non Blondes. Jocelyn has recently starred in BBC Radio 4 comedy Beauty of Britain, and made her Royal Court debut in Belong by Bola Agbaje (2012).

Co-starring with her is Nottingham-born Karl Collins, whose many TV apperarances include a stint as DC Danny Glaze in The Bill.

Led by artistic director Dawn Walton, Eclipse Theatre Company Ltd is the only black-led national touring company delivering an annual middle-scale tour to regional theatres.

Tickets to see One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show are available on 01332 593939.
