This picture shows the deep trench dug through the middle of Ilkeston in the early 1990s to make way for the new inner relief road.

Chalons Way, as the dual carriageway was later named after Ilkeston’s twin town Chalons-en-Champagne in France, was a very controversial route.

Entire streets disappeared during the building works, which lasted many months.

David Gunn captured a number of photographs as work progressed.

This view is looking down the hill from the Nottingham Road end towards the Heanor Road junction.
