£16.8m schools improvements bid

A £16.837 million package of improvements at Derbyshire schools and children’s homes is in the pipeline.

Under the Derbyshire County Council proposals school buildings would be modernised and improved across the county.

These would include £170,000 at Horsley Woodhouse Primary School to re-cover the roof and £100,000at John Flamsteed Community School in Denby for a new fire alarm.

Proposals for investing the cash are included in a report that will go to the authority’s Cabinet on Monday, June 2.

Outline plans include: £12.336m for capital maintenance projects, with £6.956 m of that being set aside for priority work such as re-wiring, re-roofing or heating replacements .Also there would be £.4.501m for ‘basic need schemes’ for 2014/2015 to provide additional school places.

A pot of £500,000 would be earmarked for joint funding initiatives with schools, where the authority provides 50 per cent of cash, which is matched by a school topay for improvements. A further £100,000 would also be put aside to improve children’s homes.

Plans are still being made for the remaining £743,693 which will go to council’s ruling cabinet for approval at a later date.

Councillor Kevin Gillott, said: “There’s a huge backlog of school repairs that increase year on year. We’re making the most of the money we do get so we give Derbyshire children the best education and start in life .

“But we’re facing unprecedented Government budget cuts.

“We’ve given highest priority to buildings in the worst condition or where improvements are needed for health and safety reasons.

“However, there is no hiding my disappointment at the level of funding provided to the council by the Coalition Government.”

* £42,500 for Harpur Hill Primary School, to contribute to a project to provide a double classroom extension.

Funding for replacement of buildings at risk includes:

* £400,000 for Alfreton Park Special School for additional funding for a hydrotherapy pool project

* £600,000 for Hasland Hall Community School to replace a building block

* £600,000 for Creswell Junior School, for a replacement cooking kitchen
