£16.8m schools improvements bid

Under the Derbyshire County Council proposals school buildings would be modernised and improved across the county.

These would include £170,000 at Horsley Woodhouse Primary School to re-cover the roof and £100,000at John Flamsteed Community School in Denby for a new fire alarm.

Proposals for investing the cash are included in a report that will go to the authority’s Cabinet on Monday, June 2.

Outline plans include: £12.336m for capital maintenance projects, with £6.956 m of that being set aside for priority work such as re-wiring, re-roofing or heating replacements .Also there would be £.4.501m for ‘basic need schemes’ for 2014/2015 to provide additional school places.

A pot of £500,000 would be earmarked for joint funding initiatives with schools, where the authority provides 50 per cent of cash, which is matched by a school topay for improvements. A further £100,000 would also be put aside to improve children’s homes.

Plans are still being made for the remaining £743,693 which will go to council’s ruling cabinet for approval at a later date.

Councillor Kevin Gillott, said: “There’s a huge backlog of school repairs that increase year on year. We’re making the most of the money we do get so we give Derbyshire children the best education and start in life .

“But we’re facing unprecedented Government budget cuts.

“We’ve given highest priority to buildings in the worst condition or where improvements are needed for health and safety reasons.

“However, there is no hiding my disappointment at the level of funding provided to the council by the Coalition Government.”

Detailed proposals for the £6.956 million of priority works include:

* £170,000 for Alfreton Park Special School to recover a flat roof

* £250,000 for Ashbrook Infant and Nursery School, Borrowash, to replace windows and doors

* £250,000 for Ashbrook Junior School, Borrowash, to replace windows and doors

* £200,000 for Brampton Primary School towards re-roofing

* £220,000 for Buxton Community School for re-roofing

* £100,000 for Calow Church of England Primary School for rewiring

* £250,000 for Creswell Junior School for heating pipes and ceilings to be replaced

* £105,000 for Curbar Primary School for roof improvements

* £130,000 for Eckington School to resurface the bus bay access road and car park

* £110,000 for Field House Infant School, Ilkeston, for heating maintenance

* £300,000 for Findern Community Primary School for roof covering and associated maintenance work

* £220,000 for Gamesley Early Excellence Centre for roof renewal works

* £165,000 for Gilbert Heathcote Nursery and Infant School, Chesterfield, for the heating system to be replaced

* £175,000 for Hady Primary School, Chesterfield, to recover a flat roof

* £150,000 for Heath Primary School for re-wiring

* £300,000 for Highfields School, Starkholmes Site, to renew external concrete cladding and single-glazed steel windows

* £130,000 for Highfields School, Matlock site, to replace a flat roof and windows

* £170,000 for Horsley Woodhouse Primary School, to re-cover a roof

* £100,000 for John Flamsteed Community School, for a new fire alarm system

* £235,000 for Kirkstead Junior School to replace a roof

* £150,000 for Lady Manners School, Bakewell, to renew roof coverings

* £110,000 for Middleton Community Primary School, for the heating system to be replaced

* £120,000 for New Mills Primary School, for re-wiring

* £100,000 for Norbriggs Primary School, Chesterfield, to re-cover a flat roof and replace roof windows

* £350,000 for Northfield Junior School to replace cladding

* £350,000 for Overseal Primary School to renew roofing

* £150,000 for Peak Dale Primary School for roof maintenance and updates

* £100,000 for Penny Acres Primary School, Holmesfield, Dronfield, for stonework and gable repairs

* £250,000 for Pilsley Primary School to re-cover roof

* £450,000 for Ripley Junior School to replace windows and cladding

* £190,000 and £126,000 for Swanwick Hall School to replace windows and re-roofing

* £170,000 for The Dronfield School to replace hanging slate covering

* £110,000 for Thornsett Primary School, Birch Vale, High Peak, to renew the heating system

* £150,000 for Wilsthorpe Business and Enterprise College for re-wiring.

Basic need work would include:

* £375,000 for Clowne Infant School for a single classroom extension

* £350,000 for Clowne Junior School for double classroom extension

* £177,000 for Gamesley Primary School for a single classroom extension to a modular building

* £350,000 for Glebe Junior School for a single classroom extension

* £375,000 for Renishaw Primary School for a single classroom extension

* £160,000 for Hadfield Infant School to create a single classroom extension to a modular building

* £250,000 for Buxton Junior School for a single classroom extension

* £87,005 for St Thomas Catholic Primary School as an additional contribution to a classroom extension and other improvements part-funded by the diocese

* £42,500 for Harpur Hill Primary School, to contribute to a project to provide a double classroom extension.

Funding for replacement of buildings at risk includes:

* £400,000 for Alfreton Park Special School for additional funding for a hydrotherapy pool project

* £600,000 for Hasland Hall Community School to replace a building block

* £2,000,000 for Glossopdale Community College towards a strategic investment plan to rebuild/refurbish the College

* £250,000 for Pottery Primary School, Belper, to replace a block with a relocated modular building

* £1,950,000 for Dallimore Primary School, Kirk Hallam, for the second phase of a three-phase project to replace the school

* £600,000 for Creswell Junior School, for a replacement cooking kitchen

* £150,000 for Ashover Primary School, to replace a cooking kitchen.

Other proposed suitability/modernisation improvements include:

* £165,000 for Barrow Hill Primary School to alter and secure a new main entrance, reception, offices and staff room

* £45,000 for Aston-on-Trent Primary School for internal reorganisation of teaching spaces

* £75,000 for Willington Primary School for internal reorganisation of teaching spaces

* £60,000 for Leys Junior School, Alfreton, for internal reorganisation of teaching spaces

* £45,000 for Little Eaton Primary School, for internal reorganisation to replace accommodation in a temporary building that has been removed

* £31,000 for Wigley Primary School, Wigley, Chesterfield, to contribute to a project to provide two group rooms in a modular building.
