An Ilkeston church is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Our Lady and St Thomas of Hereford Catholic Church on Nottingham Road will mark the occasion with a visit from Bishop Malcolm McMahon, present Bishop of Nottingham on October 23. During the service the bishop will consecrate the new altar and bless the extensions during mass.

The present church on Regent Street was built in the 1920s and consecrated in 1930, with much of the work done by the men of the parish in what were difficult economic times.

In 2007 further work was carried out on the church, providing a new porch, a gallery to increase seating capacity and a modernisation of the sanctuary and altar.

Father Colin Taylor said: "We are quite a large congregation, with an average weekly attendance in the region of 400.

"The Catholic community hope that many of the priests who have been associated with the parish will be able to join them for the occasion."
