Brothers' charity bid for city hospital
AN EX-CANCER patient whose life was saved with his brother's bone marrow is planning his biggest charity event yet to raise money for the hospital ward where he was treated.
Carl Travis, who had lymphoblastic lymphoma - a type of blood cancer - is organising a charity disco and auction at Ilkeston Town Football Club in June and is expecting to raise £2,000.
Carl's brother, Darren, underwent an operation to donate his bone marrow at Nottingham City Hospital back in 2000. The two of them, with the help of their sister Kerry, have since organised various charity events and appeared on Ready Steady Cook and Bargain Hunt to fundraise for the ward staff, who have bought new sofas and a new fridge freezer with the money.
Darren, of Anson Walk in Cotmanhay, said: "It's good to go back to the ward and physically see what your money has bought. Before they were sharing a fridge for the medicines and now they've got their own, and they're sitting on nice comfy sofas instead of little hard stools like they used to."
Darren, 33 said the nurses were so good they even gave up their staff room so he could stay with his brother, who was in and out of hospital for about a year.
Carl, 35, who now lives and works in Bulwell, said: "If it takes off we're going to do it every year. I don't know what the capacity is, but if we can fill it I'd be chuffed"
The Spitfires band from Langley Mill will be playing live on the night and their will be an auction and a raffle. The family so far have a trip to twin lakes, Derby County tickets and a signed Mansfield town shirt for prizes but desperately need more.
Anybody who would like to donate should ring Darren on 07527 758 308.
