A sports scheme in Cotmanhay, which has trained up more than 6,000 people to become budding coaches, is to be extended throughout the summer holidays thanks to a cash boost.
The Community Sports Coach Project, due to end in July, received £5,000 from the Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Management Group meaning the popular scheme could be extended through the holidays until September.
More than 200 young people now have nation
ally recognised qualifications thanks to the scheme, which also offers an innovative apprenticeship scheme.
Hayley Ash, Cotmanhay neighbourhood manager, said: "Our board members recognised the outstanding success and popularity of this scheme in Cotmanhay and so were very keen to help it continue through the summer.
"It has achieved so much, but the outstanding success is that it has given the Cotmanhay community a great platform for the future.
"The volunteers and young people that have got involved will be able to progress the project's philosophy of sport and healthy activity long after the scheme comes to an end."
Erewash borough councillor Cllr Mike Wallis said: "The scheme has been hugely popular with Cotmanhay residents and I know they will be delighted that it is to continue through the summer holidays.
"The project has been very successful in getting young people and adults into sport and activity and the good work that has been achieved is something residents will be able to enjoy and further develop even when the scheme comes to an end."
The group was set up by Erewash Borough Council in 2006 aimed at encouraging community groups in the area to help each other out.
