A mystery person at the end of their tether with youths drinking on the streets of Ilkeston nailed a sarcastic plaque to one of the town's benches.
An aluminium plate was nailed to the bench near Finn M'Couls pub on Stanton Road in the early hours of last Saturday.

It read: "Dole dossers' bench. Erected by Erewash Borough Council for Ilkeston's finest scum to drink the day away and intimidate
the old and working class."

One of the drinkers who regularly sits on the bench, said the plaque was slightly offensive but there was nowhere else for him and his friends to go.

Little Hallam ward councillor, David Stephenson, said: "A lady rang me and told me about it on Saturday morning at about 8am. I went and had a look and decided that it had to be removed. I do get a lot of complaints from decent members of the public about the people who sit on that bench.

"It must have been someone fairly practical who did it because it was done with the sort of stamps used for identification marks. I would say it would have been a man, maybe someone who works in the metal work industry.

"We had a bench removed near the toilets on White Lion Square because it got taken over by an unpleasant group of people. Hopefully the ban we have coming in (on outdoor drinking in Erewash) will do away with this stuff."

The bench faces the grassed area overlooking White Lion Square roundabout.

Robert Parkinson, Erewash Borough Council's lead member for environment, said: "You do these things (erect benches) for the benefit of the population and people spoil it. It's a matter of bringing in the pressure to persuade people not to do it."

The landlady of Finn M'Couls pub said: "They don't bother me that much really and I walk past there quite a lot. Sometimes I feel scared when I walk past but its not bothered me so much that I feel threatened for my life.

"I get more trouble from the young kids. They sit on my fire escape doorstep where my kitchen is at the side of the pub. They leave rubbish round the door and smoke and all sorts. I've rang police and asked them to move but there's only so much you can do. I just get loads of abuse from them."

The council removed the plaque on Monday.

A ban on anti-social youths drinking outdoors was enforced at a full council meeting on September 29.

The section 13 prohibition order will give police the powers to take alcohol off anyone drinking on the streets of Erewash.

The ruling is now out for public consultation for one month, and unless objections are received, it will be in place in time for Christmas.

Sober Person,

Ilkeston 06/10/2008 16:03:25
These useless layabouts don't intimidate they irritate! It's sickening to see they have children who judging by their foul mouths are the next generation of layabouts to park their backsides on the local benches whenever the sun comes out. Why are these alcoholic/drug users allowed to be a carer of a child I will never know?? Mind you...the more kids they have the more beer money they get! Wish I could booze my life away and pee up the toll bar house all day long, What a life eh? And all us normal folk pay for them to be able to do it!Why don't they sit in one of their house's which we provide the council tax and housing benefit for? They will be able to use their own toilet then rather than expose themselves to all whom walk by. Get a job you bunch of wasters and get out of town!!!!

I agree with the comments above. Get off your bums and go to work. It is a shame it was removed, this is certainly a point that needs to be made.

These are the kind of people that make my blood boil. I have worked all my life trying to secure a nice life for myself and my family. My tax and contributions are paying for the likes of these people to make other people feel uncomfortable. It makes my blood boil. I can say for a fact that if it was my son sat there all day, I would soon have something to say to him. A word of advice - I would not be proud enough to have my photograph taken for the local paper, for all to see, however this certainly shows us who to aviod.

i have been unemployed for some time now and never have i sat in public drinking the day away
through the job centre i have joined a college to help me with my work skills I WANT WORK this story as triggered off big debates in the class about whether it was right or wrong of this person i do agree that these people should not sit there all day but the money on benifets is not good so the amount of beer they can buy will not be alot and they should be looking for work but it is hard to find work in ilkeston everything is closing or the jobs are taken my forgein people who work for less i think that the council shoulld start by getting them to go to a work skills like college like we are doing they said they have no where to go with there friends they could come here

What a load of rubbish no jobs? not alot of money of benefits? There is always work if you want to find work, I would clean public toilets if it kept food on the table for my family and meant that i had respect in the community, I wouldnt sink so low as to drink on the streets. I work, so that I can go out in an Evening to have a "socialable" drink with my "friends" in the pub.

Bring back "National Service" this would make them think about how they spend their days.
