The future of the Regency Rooms in Ilkeston is in doubt because no bookings are being taken after January.
Midlands Co-op who own the venue, which is used for functions, has announced that no new bookings are being taken for the venue after January 24 next year, sparking widespread concern that the well-known function suite is to close.

The rooms form
part of the Co-op's Ilkeston department store and the company has invested hundreds of thousands of pounds refurbishing the building.

A spokesperson for Midlands Co-op said: 'Since merging with Ilkeston Society in November 2006, Midlands Co-op has invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in refurbishing Ilkeston Department Store and ensuring that The Regency Suites were operating to health and safety standards.

"It became very apparent, once we began operating out of the hospitality units, that they were in need of extensive work. In view of this, we have decided that whilst we will honour all Christmas events and events planned up to and including January 24, events after that date will have to be relocated."

Bookings, including wedding receptions have been cancelled and alternative venues have been found and deposits refunded.
The spokesperson added: " We have not taken the decision to cancel lightly but felt it was a responsible course of action to inform those concerned sooner rather than later in order that alternative arrangements can be made. We are currently in discussion with staff, and are keeping them fully informed."

Deputy leader of Erewash Borough Council, Cllr Carol Hart said the news has shocked the whole community. She said: "If the Regency Rooms were to close it would be a real loss to Ilkeston.

"The Regency Rooms are an institution in the town and hold fond memories for residents of all ages.

"Many, many people will be very upset if they are to close permanently. All sorts of events have been hosted there over the years – and the suite has entertained royalty on several occasions.

"The Rooms would be sorely missed not only by local residents but by people from further afield.

The Rotary Club of Ilkeston have used the venue for concerts for over 20 years and will hold their last organ concert at the venue on Tuesday January 13.

Rotary member Mike Perry said: "The news that the Regency Suites are closing has caused dismay to the enthusiasts who regularly attend. A new venue in Ilkeston is being sought."
