WALKING through the streets you cannot fail to notice the amount of cigarette ends that litter the pavement. And with the smoking ban now in force, the problem can only increase as more people step outside for a cigarette.
In response, Erewash Borough Council's Pride in Erewash campaign is set to give away butt pouches, which have been put together in partnership with Derby and Derbyshire Primary Care Trust, to encourage smokers to stub out their cigarettes and not thr
ow them on the floor.

The pouches are fire resistant and enable smokers to stub out their cigarette inside the pouch and then keep it until they reach a bin to empty the contents.

Two thousand of them will be available from town hall receptions, leisure centres and in doctor's surgeries.

The council's Environmental Health and Licensing teams are responsible for enforcing the new law and their approach will be based on supporting businesses to comply with the legislation. However, fixed penalty notices of up to £200 or fines can be issued to persistent offenders or those who choose to deliberately flaunt the law.

For more information or help with giving up smoking, call the NHS smoking helpline on 0800 169 0 169 visit www.gosmokefree.co.uk or text GIVEUP and your postcode to 88088.

And for details about the new smokefree laws in England call 0800 169 1697 or visit www.smokefreeengland.co.uk.
