A PROJECT to build a sensory garden at an old people's home - led by the Ilkeston Round Table - has won the backing of the Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Management Group (CNMG).
The £20,000 plans for the garden at Hazelwood Residential Home in Cotmanhay, include a water feature, planting of numerous shrubs and individual wheelchair-friendly paving areas, seating areas, plenty of colourful borders and some grassed areas.

CNMG have given £6,700 towards the costs of this scheme, including support for the summer house.

Hayley Ash, Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Manager, said: "We are delighted to support this project, the Ilkeston Round Table do a lot of positive work in the local community and the sensory garden at Hazelwood Residential Home epitomises the time and effort this organisation puts in to helping its local community.

"We hope the funding we have provided for the summer house will give the residents a nice place to sit and relax and enjoy time outside this summer."

Chris Jackson, Chairman of Ilkeston Round Table, said: "We are very grateful for the support the Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Management Team has given us. This garden will make a huge difference to the lives of the people living at Hazelwood."

The sensory garden project has involved a number of partners who have been generous with their time and money to help make it possible.

It has been designed by Mike Baldwin, a horticultural lecturer from Broomfield College in Morley. Alongside his team of students, they are now working hard to get the garden completed by the summer.

Support has also been supplied by local companies such as Bradstone Aggregates, KRM Builders, JF Beale of Derby and Hirebase, who have all supplied materials and equipment for free in support of this project.

Claris, a resident of Hazelwood Residential Home, said: "It will be lovely when it's done, I've never had a big garden and I'm looking forward to going out in the summer seeing the birds and listening to the fountain."

Her fellow resident, Flori who is 101-years-old, added: "I'd like to go out in the summer in the garden, I love flowers, and it will remind me of home as I had a beautiful garden."
