Ilkestonians lent their support to a Save Curry Campaign which gathered in London's Trafalgar Square for a huge demonstration.
SRK Choudhury and Louis and Michelle Booth of the Community Welfare Association, Midlands, attended the national day of action on Sunday April 20 which was organised by the Bangladesh Caterers Association UK.
Mrs Booth said: "The campaign highli
ghts the hastiness, insensitivity and ineffectiveness of the recent changes in the immigration rules and proposes some viable solutions to help sustain the small curry houses while helping to grow a skilled work force in Britain."
A spokesman for the Bangladesh Catering Association (BCA) said: "Together with the Chinese, Indian, Pakistani and Turkish catering communities we have formed the Ethnic Catering Alliance.
"Our action on the 20th April was to draw the country's attention to the plight and problems our communities are all facing as a direct result of current immigration policies."
The Ethnic Catering Alliance is calling on the government to recognise the unique characteristics of ethnic catering, to put the occupations in these businesses on the Occupations Shortage List and relax the rules accordingly to allow urgent recruitment.
They believe the government should invest in training programmes to resolve long-term labour problems in the British ethnic catering businesses and provide employment opportunities for local people.
