A 50-year-old Ilkeston police officer has won himself a place in the World Duathlon Championships and the European Duathlon Championships.
Super-fit Sgt Pete Orme qualified for the events - which incorporate running and cycling - when he came third in the recent British trials held at Clumber Park in Nottingham.
The events consists of a 10k run, followed by a 40k cycle ride and finis
hed with a 5k run. He came 18th in last year's World Duathlon Championships held in Hungary.
Sgt Orme currently works from Ilkeston Town Hall for Erewash Borough Council's Community Safety Team. He is the police representative within the partnership, which consists of the borough and county council, the fire service and the Primary Care Trust. They work together on tackling crime in the area.
The European championships will be held in Greece on May 24 and the world event will be held in Italy on September 27.
Sgt Orme has run over 35 marathons, won the British Police Marathon Championships three times and the European Police Marathon Championships once. In the marathon his best time was 2 hours and 27 minutes.
He said: "Qualifying for the European and World events has been fantastic for me and I'm greatly looking forward to the competition. I'm very proud to be representing my country and I feel that I have a good chance of coming within the top ten.
"The duathalon event gave me a new lease of life and a new interest after my time running marathons; I hope to keep going as long as my legs and body will let me."
