Erewash's new mayor was elected to office last Thursday in a baptism of political fire as opposition members voted against her.
Cllr Barbara Harrison became the new mayor - despite a Labour bid to elect Cllr Gail Newman who would have been mayor in 2003 but for a change of political control.

However, Conservative hands prevailed and Cllr Terry Holbrook was also voted deputy mayor over Cllr Glennice Birkin.

Cllr Harrison told the meeting she moved to Ilkeston in 1973 with her husband David. Nine months later, Erewash was born, but - she quipped - it was not their fault!

Cllr Harrison said: "David would have been as proud as punch to be here today with me but sadly that was not to be."

The Rev Simon White, of West Hallam, was named as the council's chaplain.

Aimie Hallam, 16, of Cotmanhay, is standing this year as the Mayor's Cadet.

She is supporting the Mayor in her endeavours to raise money for her chosen charities and will also help her to promote the positive things young people in the community are doing and hopefully encourage other children and young people to get more involved in their community.

Aimie is part of the 348 Air Training Squadron, based at the Drill Hall on Albert Street, Ilkeston.

Naming her charities for the year, the Mayor said: "It is an appalling fact that tonight somewhere in Erewash a child is being hurt by someone who should be looking after them.

She nominated Childline, the NSPCC and local charity Give Youth A Hand - which helps young people get started on their own.
"I am sure together we will make an impact."

Outgoing mayor Cllr Eileen Knight paid tribute to her colleagues for their help during her year in office and wished the new mayor well.
