A BID to demolish an Ilkeston social club has been given the go-ahead, despite a petition from neighbours.
Councillors approved a proposal to build four semi-detached homes on the site of the Crown Social Club and number 304 Nottingham Road, at a planning meeting on Wednesday May 7.

Councillors acknowledged the support shown for the club by local peop
le.

Cllr Howard Griffiths said: "This is some sort of commendation but we couldn't refuse it on the grounds that some of the objectors wanted. It's a sad loss for the club."

Cllr John Frudd said: "It's sad when a club goes and this is doubly sad because the area has also lost the Middleton Club. I do sympathise with the people who use this club."

Cllr Kevin Miller said: "It's a shame to lose an establishment like that but it may boost trade in local pubs."

However, cllr Gail Newman was critical of the proposal because it lacked detail.

She said: "People should be able to see what they are going to get. I am not comfortable with outline planning appplications."

Approval was granted subject to the planning authority's approval of the details of layout, means of access, landscaping and appearance, before the development starts.
