A dog found abandoned at a service station in Trowell is looking for a new home.
The male Lakeland terrier that has been named Brownie by the council employed neighbourhood wardens that rescued it, appeared to have had his tail docked illegally.
The dog will need an operation to rectify the damaged caused. Docking of tails has been illegal since the Animal Welfare Act 2006 came into force.
The highways agency had caught the dog which had been seen running between Junction 26 and Junction 25 of the M1 on Sunday March 29 and he is now being fostered by the Animal Accident Rescue Unit.
There has been an increase in the number of dogs being abandoned and people are being reminded anyone considering getting a dog that it should not be entered into lightly.
Babbington Hall Rescue kennels, which is used by the neighbourhood wardens for the rescue dogs, is already nearly full to capacity.
