Action at last for a blighted area

Land in Kirk Hallam that has blighted residents' lives will finally be cleaned up by a housing association.

In July we reported that residents whose homes back on to Windermere Avenue and St Norberts Drive were angry that they were having to clear up the mess on land which is owned by Three Valleys Housing.

The housing association promised a clean-up would take place in September but residents were left disappointed when the work wasn't carried out on the land which attracts fly tippers.

Julie Brown's elderly parents live nearby. She said: "It has got worse. There is a great big mound of rubbish. They haven't been anywhere near it and don't have any intention of tidying it up, it just looks terrible, it needs sorting, it's a disgrace."

Cllr Louis Booth, Erewash Borough councillor for Kirk Hallam has been helping residents in their fight to get the area cleared. He said: "'I would like to see some proper attention given to this garage site and at the very least, a regular maintenance programme put in place to help justify the massive increase to rents that tenants have seen this year and the introduction of the service charge, way in excess of inflation.

"It's time for an inflated action plan from Three Valleys.''

Work was last carried out a year ago when brambles were cleared. A spokesperson from Three Valleys Housing said: "As with all our estates, we have monitored the site regularly and arranged for flytipped waste to be removed.

"We can confirm that the work to clear the long grass and bushes on the site will start on Monday October 13."
