Teenage cancer-sufferer Alex Read mingled with stars, including Prince Harry, during an inspirational awards ceremony.

The St John Houghton Academy pupil who had an arm amputated earlier this year as part of his treatment for bone cancer won the Inspirational Young Person Award at the 2013 WellChild awards in London.

The Prince, who is a patron of the charity, met all the brave youngsters receiving awards and found time to have a chat with 14-year-old Alex.

“It was really nice – Prince Harry told me he liked my hat. He was really down-to-earth and normal,” he said.

“He even asked about what I’d been going through.

“I don’t feel like I deserve the award really but I’m very happy to have received it.”

Stars at the show included rock star Rod Stewart, TV presenter Vernon Kay and pop singer Pixie Lott.

Alex said: “My favourite part of the evening was that I got to meet so many people. I got taken round to meet Vernon and the rest of the presenters and producers.”

Prince Harry said: “I’m hugely humbled to be the patron of Well Child and I count myself incredibly lucky to be able to meet these children. They are all incredibly brave.”

Alex was nominated by his sister Eleanor for the award.

She said: “My brother is caring, courageous and very special. He has a long and difficult journey to travel but he continues to surprise us with his determination.”
