Farmers in the Erewash area are being called upon to help clear snow from roads as winter approaches.

More than 50 farmers and contractors have already signed up across the county to earn extra money this winter by helping Derbyshire County Council’s gritter drivers plough roads across the county.

But only three have come forward in Erewash so the county council is appealing for more.

All farmers signed-up receive payment including a guaranteed minimum of £200 even if it doesn’t snow.

Cllr Dean Collins, deputy cabinet member for jobs, economy and transport, said: “We provide 24-hour cover during winter to respond to weather conditions using our fleet of specialist gritters and other vehicles.

“But extra help is needed to clear snow from other roads such as to isolated villages, industrial areas and schools not already on a gritting route.”

Anyone interested in signing-up would need to provide their own equipment such as plough, buckets and snow blowers.
