SOAP fans can catch a sneak preview of new bins set to appear in Ilkeston at the end of this month.

An Erewash Borough Council spokesman said that an example of the state-of-the-art Smartbins, about to be installed in the town centre, can be seen outside the Kabin in ITV’s Coronation Street.

The 18 bins, which cost £4,000, are designed for chewing gum and cigarette ends.

They can wrap around lampposts, signposts, railings and bollards and fit on to bus shelters and flat walls.

Cllr Barbara Harrison said: “These bins will be conveniently located and will mean there is now absolutely no excuse for smokers to throw their cigarette ends on the floor or for people to drop chewed gum on the pavements.”
