HAMMER wielding would-be robbers tried to smash their way into a bank on Monday.
Two men smashed the glass front door and side window of Santander in Long Eaton at about 6.45pm.
Terrified security guards and staff, filling up the ATM machine in the bank at the time, managed to secure the money and lock themselves in the back room of the High Street bank.
The offenders, wearing balaclavas or face masks, tried to smash security equipment but failed to get any money.
Witnesses saw them run on to Beaconsfield car park where they got into a black VW Golf and sped off along Beaconsfield Road onto Main Street towards Sawley. Police found the car abandoned on Cobden Street at about 9pm.
Witnesses should call 0345 123 33 33.
