Bath Street escalator plan

Sir There have been several mistakes by the planners concerning Ilkeston centre.

One mistake was to divide the old British Home Stores shop which accommodates Boots and Manor Pharmacy. Both shops are an asset to the town but there are many properties that are of a similar size.

Whilst there is only one shop big enough to accommodate a Netto, Lidl, TJ Hughes, Primark and other similar large retailers and that is the now defunct Woolworths store.

Another mistake is parking charges which tend to drive (pardon the pun) shoppers out of town to the many out-of-town shopping centres where parking is free.

Another mistake is to make virtually no effort to make Bath Street easy to negotiate. The road train trial was a good example that now seem to have died a death.

A futuristic idea, but obviously out of the question because of cost, would be an outdoor escalator - shops have them indoors, we need outdoors! But this is the type of forward thinking we can only dream about.
