BRAINY Laura Chapman from Ilkeston had two reasons to celebrate on Thursday – her 16th birthday and a whopping nine A* GCSEs.

Laura, the youngest Year 11 pupil at independent Ockbrook School, said she was ‘speechless’.

“This is the best birthday present ever,” she said.

“My parents have been so supportive and I have to thank them and all my teachers who have enabled me to achieve such wonderful results.”

Laura, who also got an A in English literature, was one of a staggering 35 per cent of pupils at the all-girls’ school to get nine straight As or A*s.

Georgina Pitts from Ilkeston received 6 A*s and an A while Kate Ellen from the town got seven A*s and three As. Isabel Perry from Dale Abbey achieved nine A*s and an A.
