BREAKING NEWS: Derbyshire County Council approves plans to build new library in Heanor

Plans for a new £890,000 library to replace the unsafe one in Heanor have been given the green light. The new building to replace the old one on Ilkeston Road will have an improved children’s library, a health and wellbeing zone, custom-built computer area and communal seating and study areas in the £892,500 building, which should be open to the public by March next year.

There will be a local studies section, audio book loan, self-service points and areas for public events such as author visits.

A structural engineer’s report recommended the existing library should be closed on safety grounds unless it was immediately renovated – a project which would cost thousands more than providing a brand new building, said a spokesman for Derbyshire County Council, which operates the library.

Councillor Dave Allen said: “We are delighted to approve these plans for a modern library with a wide range of improved facilities and accessible services for the residents of Heanor.

“This decision shows our commitment to providing high quality services in the town which are fit for the future while also providing taxpayers with the best value for money.

“Meanwhile, we’re close to securing a temporary base in the town centre and are doing everything we can to minimise disruption.”

Councillors approved a recommendation to demolish the existing building and provide a new library and car park when they meet on Tuesday, April 15

They also agreed a recommendation to temporarily relocate the library in a vacant shop in the town centre – the potential location is currently being finalised. The library will close t the public today, Thursday April, 17.
