A DOG has died in a fire at a flat in Ilkeston, the fire service has said.

Crowds gathered in Wood Street this afternoon as fire crews from Ilkeston, Heanor and Long Eaton tackled the blaze in the third-floor flat.

Ilkeston station manager Gary Platts confirmed that the occupant’s dog – thought to be a Japanese Akita puppy – was found dead by firefighters.

The occupant of the flat was believed to be at work during the blaze.
