An Ilkeston engineering firm is in the running to win two awards for success in business in Derbyshire – including Business of the Year.
Atlas Composites, which made components for the Team GB’s Olympic cylcing team, is also up for the Excellence in Innovation award at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC) BEST Business Awards 2012.
Atlas, based at the Quarry Hill Industrial Estate, is up against manufacturers the Greenbank Group, and Chesterfield-based Inspirepac for the top award, Business of the Year.
It also faces Greenbank Group in the Excellence in Innovation award as well as Ashbourne-based Whitehouse Construction.
Atlas is the only Ilkeston firm up for any of the awards, which are aimed at recognising and rewarding the achievements of Derbyshire firms and business leaders.
Winners in each of the nine categories win £100,000.
They will be announced at a gala black tie awards dinner at The Roundhouse in Derby on September 28.
DNCC chief executive George Cowcher said the calibre of entries was ‘extremely high’.
“I think what this does show is that even in spite of the current challenges in the economy and the fact that official figures would suggest that we are in a technical recession, there are still businesses out there which are performing well, innovating and winning new customers and market share,” he said.
