The building has been closed since last month. But the library will now operate from 3 Ray Street, in the empty camping shop Weekend Leisure until the new replacement building is finished.

Heanor councillor Paul Jones, who is the new Labour leader of Amber Valley Borough Council, said he was pleased at the progress being made in themove to relocate the library.

He said: “The base is located in the heart of the town centre, which I hope will be easily accessible for residents who wish to use the facilities.

“We hope to continue to maintain an excellent standard of library service in Heanor during this transition period.”

Work has started on renovating the shop and the temporary library should be ready to open to the public in mid-June.

Work will then begin on demolishing the old building.

The existing site on Ilkeston Road was built in the 1950s and has suffered severe structural damage. It was closed on safety grounds.

Plans for a new £890,000 replacement library on the Ilkeston Road site have been given the green light and the new multi-purpose building is set to re-open in March next year.

It will house an improved children’s library, a health and wellbeing zone, a computer area and communal seating and study areas with audio book loan and self-service points.
