Calls for CCTV cameras to be installed at Ilkeston’s Park Cemetery have been made after alleged vandalism over Christmas.
More than 50 people commented on a post on Facebook letting people know headstones and flowers had been damaged in the graveyard on Cantelupe Road.
People expressed a need for security measures at the cemetery to be upped after a string of separate incidents over the last few weeks.
But Erewash Borough Council and the police say they have received no reports of vandalism from grieving relatives.
A spokesman for the council said: “It was the weather, groundsmen have reported items that have been blown around as a result of the bad weather.
“There has been no vandalism.”
However posters on the social network said that they had seen headstones and items placed next to graves damaged and that the weather could not have been the cause of some of the damage.
But mystery continued to surround what had happened at the cemetery when the posts were removed from the site late on Monday with some Facebook users accusing the original informant of making the claims up.
