Labour councillors have welcomed a review of CCTV in Erewash but has asked Erewash Borough Council to improve its methods of consultation.
CllrMichelle Booth said that the review was long overdue, but would be welcomed by Erewash residents and police teams.
However, she criticised the Council’s method of informing the public that a review had been commissioned, using the case of a Kirk Hallam resident as an example.
“A petition was handed in to the Council calling for CCTV coverage at the shopping precinct in Kirk Hallam’s Queen Elizabeth Way a year ago and the resident who organised it is still awaiting a response.
“Campaigners have not been informed that the review is underway and by failing to consult local residents on matters like this, the Council is missing valuable sources of information.”
The review will assess the viability of existing cameras and the need for and suggested locations for additional cameras .
Results of the review and recommendations are expected by the end of the month.
