Charity cash in John's memory

MONEY raised at the funeral of a well-known Heanor man will be split between two charities.

More than 1,200 was raised at the funeral of John Clay senior, 77, on December 11.

The money will go towards the Help For Heroes charity because his grandson is serving with the Royal Navy in Afghanistan, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, which he was involved in.

Mr Clay, who died on November 28, was married to Joyce, 72, for 50 years and they had three sons Robert, 48, Richard, 46, Trudy, 43, and grandsons John, 21, and David, 19.

He was involved with a number of groups. He was the youth leader at Aldercar School for 30 years, was also involved in the Eastwood Probus Club and was chairman of Heanor Miners' Welfare Bowls.

He also helped out at Heanor Advice Bureau and was youth club leader at Marlpool Congregational Church. When he retired from his job in accounts he helped out at the Midland Railway Centre, Stepping Stones and Meals on Wheels.

His family, this week, presented a cheque to representatives from the two chosen charities.
