COLUMN: Ilkeston station plans are progressing by Maggie Throup MP

I am delighted to finally be moving into my new permanent community office in the former Co-op building on South Street.

The building’s new owner, ALB Investments, is doing a fantastic job of renovating this iconic Ilkeston landmark and I believe it will help to attract many businesses into the town.

I hope my office will become a real community hub where local residents can drop in for help and advice from me and my dedicated team of staff.

I’m pleased to report that the construction of Ilkeston’s new train station is now progressing well.

I have been advised by the project team at Derbyshire County Council that all preparatory works have now been completed, including an extensive mine working survey, and we should expect the main works to begin in March.

If everything goes according to plan, the station should be open to passengers by the end of October.

While I share the frustration of many that this project has been held up unnecessarily, I believe that the opening of the new station will be a turning point for our town. Over the coming months we must seriously consider how we link the station up with the rest of Ilkeston, especially Bath Street.

It was a pleasure to meet Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner candidate Richard Bright at a meeting he organised together with other local MPs to discuss crime and policing across the county.

I was shocked to learn from him that whilst overall crime is down in our area, on average between July and September last year one rape per week was reported to Derbyshire Police, linked to nights out in either Ilkeston, Long Eaton or Derby.

I am committed to working with Richard and our police to raise awareness of this.

On Friday March 18, I will be hosting the inaugural Erewash Community Fair on Ilkeston Market Place.

This combined jobs and community fair will bring representatives from local business, charities, support and advice agencies, as well as local health and sports clubs, with a number of employment, training and volunteering opportunities on offer during the day.
