A Ilkeston councillor has spoken of his delight that his uncle’s headstone is one of five to be re-instated at Stanton Cemetery.

Tim Maloney, who sits on Erewash Borough Council for the Old Park area, said he had waited nearly 40 years to see the war grave of Gunner Patrick Maloney, killed in World War Two, put back in its rightful place.

Last week we reported that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is looking for relatives of five soldiers buried at the cemetery. The headstones were removed in 1974 after falling into disrepair and re-commemorated at Park Cemetery.

Cllr Malony said he had been in contact with the commission for some time. He said: “I’m really pleased that we are going to get his proper army grave up now. It has taken nearly 40 years but the commission now have the finances so it’s getting closer.”
