Course to support dementia carers

Carers who look after people with dementia are being urged to sign-up for a six-week course being held in Belper.

Attendees will be given legal and financial advice, tips on coping strategies, understanding dementia and the agencies that can help during the sessions at The Cottage on Chapel Street.

Run by The Alzheimer’s Society and,funded by Derbyshire County Council and NHS the programme will begin on Tuesday, April 29 starting at 2pm and finishing at 4.30pm and will run on the same day and time for six weeks, with the final session on June 3.

There are currently believed to be more than 13,000 people in Derbyshire living with dementia and 3,000 withinin Derby city alone.

Stephen Tomlinson, Support Group Facilitator for Alzheimer’s Society, said:“We are really pleased to have this opportunity to deliver this course in Belper.

“When people are diagnosed with this condition they are often devastated. It not only affects them but also their families.

“This programme will give those that care for people with dementia valuable knowledge, but more importantly the message that they are not alone.”
