14 pets found in ‘filthy’ flat

AN RSPCA inspector described the squalid conditions in which he found 11 cats and three dogs at an Ilkeston home as ‘one of the worst’ he has seen in 30 years of doing the job.
Three of the cats found had starved to death, the other animals were ridden with fleas and had been neglected.
Yeo, 24, of Boweswell Road, pleaded guilty to seven charges in relation to causing unnecessary suffering to cats and dogs and also failing to meet their welfare needs at Derby Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Inspector Gary Eastwood first called at the property in August last year.
Before entering Yeo’s second floor flat he had to put on protective clothing because conditions inside the home were so bad.
Reading from a report written by Mr Eastwood, John Sutcliffe, prosecuting, said: “In almost 30 years of service with the RSPCA I have never had the misfortune to enter such a dirty, smelly and flea infested premises.
“The number of fleas was unbelievable, you could hear and see them moving around on the floor.”
While searching the Three Valleys Housing property he found the three dead cats and two severely underweight Staffordshire bull terriers with patches of fur missing.
Other cats that were described as being in ‘reasonable bodily condition’ were also recovered.
The inspector said in his report that there was not a flat surface in the house that didn’t have animal mess on it.
RSPCA inspectors returned to the property on two other occasions and found and recovered more cats.
Aisling Wall, representing Yeo, told the court he was a young man with personal and emotional problems who had not been in any trouble before.
Yeo was bailed and told he must not keep or possess any animals until he is sentenced later this month after a report.
Magistrates said that a custodial sentence is an option.
