Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, May 9, how Nathan Millington, 24, had been on Holywell Street near the Evolution Bar when he ignored requests to move on and abused police.

Prosecuting solicitor Ian Shaw said: “When police were trying to deal with the victim of an assault one of the police had to get involved with Millington.

“An officer went to Millington because he was trying to push to get to another person outside the bar where police were assisting the assault victim.

“The officer said Millington smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred and he was trying to push past to get back to the bar and was told he would get a Section 27 notice to leave the town centre because it was felt he would cause further problems if he remained.”

Millington went on to verbally abuse police and he refused to co-operate, according to Mr Shaw, as officers struggled to deal with injured assault victim so Millington was arrested.

The defendant, of Main Street, Retford, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a public place after the incident last month.

Millington, who represented himself, said: “I agree I was being drunk and disorderly. I kept trying to speak to my brother then two officers wanted to give me a ticket and I had an argument with one officer. I agree it was not all right to use offensive language.”

Magistrates stressed Millington’s behaviour was unacceptable and he had caused substantial disorder.

Millington was fined £300 by magistrates and ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
