Extra jail time as paedophile admits abuse

A paedophile has got extra time in jail after a boy victim found the courage to talk about abuse which happened more than 30 years ago.

John Moss, now 49, was already in prison after abusing children in the Alfreton area over a 14-year period, ending in 1993.

He has now pleaded guilty to one charge of indecent assault between 1979 and 1981. At Derby Crown Court on February 26, he was jailed for a year and put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a decade.

Moss, who lived in Nottingham before being jailed, was initially sent to prison for seven years but lodged an appeal and this term was reduced. He had admitted four charges of indecent assault on a female, five indecent assaults on a male and three counts of indecency with a child.

When he was sentenced in 2011, Judge Ebrahim Mooncey told him: “There comes a time when truth does catch up.”

Moss’s barrister said he handed himself over to police when allegations were made in 2010 after he had “carried the guilt around with him for many years”.

Moss of Maud Street, Nottingham “took himself to the police station and made admissions,” the court heard.

The offences began when Moss was aged 15. He told a girl victim: “Don’t tell anyone or the bogeyman will get you.”

And at the age of around 26, he abused an eight-year-old girl and told her it was “our little secret.”

The new sentence will be served at the same time as the previous one. His earliest release date is in July.

Detective constable Karen Horner, who investigated the latest case, said: “However old allegations are, we will investigate. People will always be believed.”
