Gardening gear stolen from town pensioners’ club

THE MANAGER of a club for pensioners in Ilkeston has blasted the burglars who stole hundreds of pounds worth of gardening equipment at the weekend.

At some point between the last event at the Welcome Hall in St John’s Road at 5pm on Saturday and Monday lunchtime, burglars cut the locks to the garage and stole a petrol lawn mower and a brand new leaf vacuum, which had never been used.

Ann Bagshaw, manager of the hall, which is funded entirely by rents paid by the groups who hire it, said it is the fourth time in the 12 years she has worked there that expensive gardening gear has been stolen and has had to be replaced.

“It makes you think, is it worth it?” she said. “But the reason we run the Welcome Hall is the pensioners and you have just got to carry on for them.”

In recent months the club has had its cigarette bin vandalised three times by gangs of youths but Ann blames more experienced thieves for the latest burglary.

She added: “I’ve no patience with these people. There is no excuse to steal things.”
