A HORSE-OWNER alerted police after nearly falling for a scam trying to sell his horse.
Police are now alerting owners to be on their guard against potential scammers on equine sales websites.
A man in America had agreed to buy the horse and posted a cheque for the full amount and shipping costs.
The Ilkeston man then received an email claiming to be from a US shipping agent asking for a transfer of money via Western Union for the costs.
Suspicious, he delayed the transaction and contacted police and the cheque was found to be fraudulent.
Insp Erica Green, who co-ordinates Derbyshire Horsewatch, said: “You should always wait until the money has cleared and verified before parting with your animal. If in doubt then you should call your local police on 0345 123 33 or trading standards department.”
